New Imperial Palace, 1968

In 1968, we produced and installed hand-knotted Dantsu carpets for the newly built Imperial Palace. The project was overseen by architect Junzo Yoshimura in collaboration with the Temporary Imperial Palace Construction Department of the Imperial Household Agency.

Our hand-knotted Dantsu carpets were laid in many of the Palace’s most significant rooms, including the “Spring and Autumn Room,” “Wave Room,” “Stone Bridge Room,” “Chidori Room,” “Chigusa Room,” and the East Lobby. In the Main Audience Room, we created custom carpets tailored to every space.

Photographs preserved in our workshop today record each stage of this monumental project—from production and inspection to shipping—capturing both the immense scale of craftsmanship and the unwavering concentration it required.

One of the most remarkable works is Clouds, a design by Nihonga painter Nei Sugiyama for the “Spring and Autumn Room.”
