These photographs capture the installation and carving (sculptural finishing) of carpets at the “Gokidani Residence,” designed by Japanese architect Isoya Yoshida in 1971.

After laying down a custom mustard-colored carpet, Yoshida’s specified design was positioned at full scale, upon which artisans executed the carving directly on site. The work was carried out under an atmosphere of tense concentration, where even the slightest mistake or deviation was not permitted.

The photographs show how the process, which began in natural daylight, ended with the view outside the windows enveloped in darkness—a vivid record of the long hours of sustained concentration. Over the course of two days, Yoshida’s designs were carved into the carpets of each room at the “Gokidani Residence.”

1971年、建築家・吉田五十八の設計による「御器谷邸」で行われた、じゅうたん敷き込み工事とカービング仕上げ（彫刻仕上げ）の施工風景です。

芥子色の特注カーペットを敷き込んだ後、吉田五十八が指定した図案を実寸大で配置し、その場で職人がカービングを施しました。わずかな誤差も許されない、一瞬一瞬に緊張感が漂う作業です。

写真には、自然光のもとで始まった作業が、終わる頃には窓外が闇に包まれている様子が記録されています。長時間にわたる集中した作業が窺えます。「御器谷邸」では2日間にわたって、吉田氏の図案が各部屋のカーペットにカービングされました。
