Case Study: National Yoyogi Gymnasium – VIP Room, Designed by Kenzo Tange, 1964

In 1964, we produced and installed a custom wall-to-wall carpet for the VIP Room of the National Yoyogi Gymnasium, designed by Kenzo Tange. The furniture for this distinguished space was designed by Isamu Kenmochi.

Set against the backdrop of the Tokyo Olympics, a milestone event that symbolized Japan’s postwar recovery and rapid economic growth, these two legendary figures of the era came together in a remarkable collaboration.

The VIP Room, with its striking organic form, features Suikan (Water Crown), an artwork commissioned by Kenzo Tange from the renowned painter Toko Shinoda, alongside reception furniture designed by Isamu Kenmochi. The furniture was crafted by Tendo Mokko, a woodworking manufacturer from Yamagata—our home region.

It is profoundly moving to reflect on how Yamagata’s craftsmanship contributed to this historically significant space, designed to welcome distinguished guests from around the world at one of Japan’s most defining international events of the 1960s.

The wall-to-wall carpet, which appears reddish in color photographs due to lighting, is in fact an undyed natural beige. It features a 12mm pile height, woven in an alternating loop and cut pile structure, creating a refined texture in a single tone.

With its bold yet understated design, free from unnecessary embellishments, the minimalist finish of the carpet likely reflected the passion and energy of those who gathered in the space.

1964年、丹下健三の設計による「国立代々木競技場・貴賓室」に、特注の敷き込みカーペットを製作・納入しました。貴賓室の家具を手がけたのは剣持勇。日本が戦後復興を遂げ、高度成長へと向かう象徴的な出来事となった東京オリンピックの舞台で、時代を代表する2人の巨匠が共演しました。

有機的なフォルムが印象的な貴賓室には、画家・篠田桃紅が丹下健三の依頼を受け制作した作品「水冠」が飾られ、剣持勇がデザインを手がけた応接家具が並びます。その家具を製作したのは、同郷山形の木工家具メーカー・天童木工です。1960年代の日本を決定づける国際的なイベント。その要人を迎える空間に山形のものづくりが揃ったことは、感慨深い出来事です。

照明の影響でカラー写真では赤みを帯びて見える敷き込みカーペットは、実は無染色の生成りです。12ミリの長い毛足に、ループとカットの2種類を交互に織り込み、同色の織柄で繊細なテクスチャを生み出しています。 余計な装飾を施さず、潔く仕上げられた生成りのカーペットは、この空間に集った人々と時代の熱気まで映していたことでしょう。
