In 1977, we produced and installed custom-made wall to wall carpets for the New Sogetsu Kaikan, designed by Kenzo Tange Associates.

In our workshop, detailed records remain, carefully documenting the trial and error and craftsmanship that shaped the production process at the time.

The base color tone of the carpets features “purple,” a hue that is characteristically seen in several of Tangeʼs architectural works. This same shade of purple was also adopted for the exterior tiles of the Old Sogetsu Kaikan, completed in 1958, reflecting the wishes of Sofu Teshigahara, the first Iemoto (headmaster of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana).

This “purple,” which can be seen as a color motif connecting the creative visions of both architect and client, as well as the two buildings, was chosen as the main tone for the carpets of the New Sogetsu Kaikan. The purple carpets were dyed using multiple gradations and tonal variations, with threads blended to create subtle shifts in overall color and weaving techniques from floor to floor.

Unified under a purple tone yet varied in texture across the floors, the carpets gently complement the architectural spaces, quietly evoking an organic, non-uniform impression from the ground up.

When closely observed, the differences are minimal—yet it is precisely this careful accumulation of subtle distinctions that leads to a truly unique creation. The unwavering commitment to detail, the shared vision of Tange and Teshigahara, and the spirit of unity between architect, client, and craftspeople still resonate vividly through the work today.

1977年竣工、丹下健三・都市・建築設計研究所によって設計された「新草月会館」に、特注の敷き込みカーペットを製作・納入いたしました。

工房には、当時の試行錯誤とものづくりの過程を克明に記録した資料が残されています。

カーペットのベースとなる色調は、丹下健三氏のいくつかの建築作品でも特徴的に見られる「紫」です。この「紫」は、同じく丹下氏の設計により1958年に竣工した「旧草月会館」の外壁タイルにも、草月流の初代家元・勅使河原蒼風の意向によって採用されています。

設計者と施主、双方のクリエイション、そしてふたつの建築作品を繋ぐ色調モチーフともいえる「紫」が、「新草月会館」ではカーペットの色調として採用されています。紫色のカーペットは、いくつものグラデーションと階調、糸のブレンドで染め分けられ、フロアごとに全体の色調や織りの技法を微かに変化させています。

紫のトーンで統一されながらも、フロアごとに異なるテクスチャのカーペットが建築空間に寄り添うことで、画一的ではない有機的な印象を足元から静かに演出していたことが想像されます。

ひとつひとつを眺めると、ほんの僅かな違い。その違いこそを大切に積み上げ、無二のクリエイションを導き出すディテールへの揺るぎない姿勢。丹下氏と勅使河原氏の眼差し、設計者と施主、作り手が一体となったものづくりに対する気迫が、今もなお生き生きと伝わってくる資料です。
